Wolf & Grizzly Campfire Grill Set Review
Since we’re still locked down there’s not much camping happening at the moment, but the chance to ‘eat out’ for a change and dream of future trips meant I was keen to borrow the new Wolf And Grizzly campfire set to take it out for a test*!
The trio set includes includes the fire safe, grill and fire set (to create a spark). One of Wolf & Grizzly’s strongest assets is clever and beautiful design. All the pieces fold down neatly and are made with high quality materials that are chosen to withstand heat and gain character with age. This is reflected in the weight, a relatively hefty 2kg.
The fire safe folds down flat, and is essentially a portable fire pit so you can safely set up your campfire wherever you are. The height adjustable grill rolls up when it’s not in use, and slots together to sit above the firesafe when you’re ready to cook.
Purists might want to hunt and gather everything from your fuel to your fish, in which case it comes with a ‘fire set’ tool to create the spark to get your fire going. You can use wood, coal or whatever’s to hand, but we used kindling brought from home as we were testing in the bleak midwinter and there was no dry fuel around!
As a first attempt we made roast vegetable and halloumi wraps which cooked with no problem and tasted good. I’d be excited to grill fish or something a bit more substantial, bearing in mind that you’d have to carry it in to wherever you’re camping (if you’re not car camping). There’s a definite technique to cooking on a fire and I need more practice to cook well on it, but that’s all part of the experience. I do feel it really expands the options for camp cooking compared to the gas stove I normally take.
The Wolf & Grizzly campfire trio is a satisfying piece of kit, the options are really only limited by your own cooking ability and the availability of ingredients. At an RRP of £180 for the set it’s pricey, but it’s well-made and I have a feeling the initial investment will last for years and years. The grill and fire set is is versatile enough for full-on survivalists to car campers, although it is heavy if you’re going fully self-sufficient, and you’d need a separate system to boil water. I would personally use it for wild camping by the beach on the Scottish islands, one night tent trips and bothies rather than multi-day backpacking when I’d want to reduce weight to a minimum.
